While Dad was flying cargo missions over The Hump during World War II, Mom arranged for Dad to become a partner in the Rainbow Lodge and Trading Post, located at the head of the trail leading down to Rainbow Bridge near Navajo Mountain.  She purchased Dad a half interest in the concern as an anniversary present and he invested time and money toward improving the lodge, including construction of a 2,000 foot runway, the installation of a walk-in icebox, a five-kilowatt generator and a half dozen cabins, which he hired Del Webb to build.

Rainbow Lodge and its rugged surroundings, including the primitive road featured here, proved a favorite subject field for his photographic pursuits both during his tenure and beyond.
